Just Auslan did another one for ‘know’ with “non-manual features” (NMF). This is an example of many. Every and each individual can vary their facial/expression using NMF associated with signs. Auslan is not just word by word. It is a visual language, as rich and as complex as any spoken language. This is why it’s important to learn from an Auslan tutor in a visual setting (class, one on one, online), not by a book or self-taught. #deaf #deafcommunity #deafcommunityaustralia #learnauslan #auslan

Signs in Auslan don’t always correspond directly with English words. This video contains useful Auslan signs that encompass a whole English phrase. * finally - notice the lip pattern here: ‘pah.’ This sign is used frequently - if someone is late and has just arrived, you could sign ‘pah’. * now I get it - the lip pattern here is also ‘pah.’ This sign is used for a moment of enlightenment, when you have suddenly understood something. * good riddance - the lip pattern here is ‘sha.’ You can do thi

In Auslan, there are three types of questions that are asked. • Yes/No questions - “Are you a teacher?” • Information questions - “Where do you live?” • Rhetorical questions - to break up information. There are rules for the manner in which the questions are asked. Yes/No Questions: • Body leans forward • Eyebrows are raised • Eyes opened wide Information Questions: • Body leans back • Eyebrows are low • Eyes squint Rhetorical Questions: These are usually used when a speaker is giving a long blo

Use these Auslan signs when asking questions. Vocab: • Who • What • Where • When • Why • How • How much • How many • Which In Auslan, the grammar is different from English. When asking a question, the W-word goes last. For example, when asking 'When did you eat?", you would sign 'YOU EAT WHEN?' To ask "Where do you live?" you sign 'YOU LIVE WHERE?' You'll notice in these examples that I have omitted 'did' and 'do'. In Auslan, words such as “and”, “to”, “a”, “the”, “it”, “be”, “are” etc. are not

These are signs which vary in direction according to context. For example, the following signs are signed differently depending on who is receiving: • Give me/you/everyone • Help me/you/everyone • Teach you/me/everyone • Show you/me • Tell you/me In the last lesson, I taught you to add the word FINISH to a verb, to show past tense. However, if that verb is directional, like the signs in the video, then you should add the sign FINISH before the verb, not after it. For example, “You told me not to

Did you know? Not all Auslan signs look like what they mean! While some signs are iconic and visually represent their meaning (like opening a book or drinking from a cup), others are arbitrary, with no visual connection to the concept (like signs for "why" or "love"). Just like spoken languages, Auslan has its own structure, rules, and creativity that go beyond simple visual cues. I’ve made a video to show you the difference between iconic and arbitrary signs – check it out and learn how depth s
